Richard Mungall, SEP, ASW
Movement, flow, and interruption

I'm Richard. Since a young age my life has been about movement and flow—and what happens when that is disrupted. I mean this literally: I have spent most of my outdoor life on a bicycle, doing freestyle street riding. This art has allowed me to explore the world in ways unavailable to most, and cultivate a sense of peace and freedom that few have.

It’s also showed me what it's like to be intruded on by forces who believe life should look different than how you’re trying to live it—sometimes in terrifying, violent ways.

This happens to all of us.

Perhaps it’s not difficult to see how this is a metaphor for the universal human experience. We all come into life with a path before us, with unique desires and ways of expressing ourselves. Even in the most harmonious upbringing, these proclivities can be squelched by well-meaning caretakers in a society that has its own ideas of who we should be.

A more common experience, of course, is being reared by people who were broken in their own ways and pass their pain along to us.

To maintain a sense of safety and acceptance, we contort around all of this brokenness, all this expectation. We begin conform to a life that isn’t genuinely ours. We lose our way.

How I help

My journey has been about harmonizing with the flow of life and fostering an ever-deepening connection to my unique expression. I am fully aware of both the challenges and fulfillment inherent in this, and I am committed to helping you navigate this territory.

You’ve seen who you can be, but can’t yet see how to get from here to there. I’ve ridden down roads you perhaps haven’t yet noticed. I can help you find your own trail.

What I bring

I am a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner with advanced training in healing the shaky foundations arising from early life neglect and abuse (developmental trauma). I have a background in relational psychotherapy and Jungian practices, various forms of meditation, a vast repertoire of creative movement practices, and real experience in a wide variety of other healing modalities. A connection with the natural world underlies all my work. I'm an artist at heart.

I received my master's degree in clinical work from Columbia University in New York with an emphasis on systemic social justice issues. I am an integrationist, reaching into all corners of life for information and experiences, and have access to countless resources that can augment the work we do together in sessions. I am personally familiar with and have the capacity to explore dark, intense and unusual territories.

Most importantly, I'm here to listen to you, ALL of you, including parts of yourself that you've been taught to be ashamed of or have long forgotten about. I'm a fierce advocate for your whole self. Finding and welcoming your vitality, heart and soul is my intuitive gift.
